In the video, John takes us through the major moves that displaced these Chinese companies, and put America on top.

But Trina gave a troubling update to its quarterly guidance a couple weeks ago, saying that it shipped 390-400 megawatts of solar modules during the quarter, down from its original 420-430 megawatt estimate. With gross margins of just 1% to 3%, Trina isn't faring as badly as peer ReneSola (NYSE: SOL  ) , which posted negative gross margins in its quarterly report earlier this month. Yet Trina still isn't making enough money to come close to profitability in the near future.

The market exchanges are out with their latest tallies on short sales, and the number of bearish wagers as of mid-April have been falling sharply for many of the country's bellwethers.

There were just 2.2 million shares of Dangdang (NYSE: DANG  ) sold short. That's a 52-week low for the Chinese e-tailer, and well below the 9.6 million shares that were sold short in May of last year. SINA (NASDAQ: SINA  ) also clocked in with a new low. There were just 1.8 million shares in bearish wagers against the online portal behind the Twitter-like SINA Weibo platform. There were 9 million shares sold short 10 months ago. Renren (NYSE: RENN  ) came in at 3.8 million shares sold short, near its low of 3.1 million just two weeks earlier. There were 24.9 million shares of Renren borrowed by skeptics of the leading social networking website operator in May of last year.

The exodus isn't universal. Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU  ) had 11.2 million shorted shares as of mid-April. The leading video streaming website hasn't had this many naysayers since late last year.

Most of the fears that investors have come from Baidu's rising competition. Traditionally, Baidu's partnership with SINA (NASDAQ: SINA  ) Weibo has given the search star useful social information to augment its services. But with rival Alibaba having taken an 18% stake in Weibo three months ago, that partnership could be in danger if Alibaba's use of Weibo information leads Baidu customers to advertise less. Meanwhile, the gains for Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU  ) have continued, with the stock having almost quadrupled in the past year as the upstart company has achieved a 15.6% search market share. With its browser having about 25% market share, Qihoo's growth prospects might be slowing down, but the network effects could continue eating away at Baidu's leading position in the market.

  • [By Kevin Chen]

For some time, China's largest search engine could always count on its partnership with SINA (NASDAQ: SINA  ) Weibo, a Twitter-like service, to infuse Baidu products with social information. But now that China's biggest e-commerce retailer Alibaba has bought shares in Weibo, Baidu investors should be scared. Not only may Baidu lose its social edge, but the Alibaba-SINA deal could also spell trouble for Baidu's future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Kevin Chen]

To be fair, these revenues come from their stake in game company Changyou (NASDAQ: CYOU  ) . Because Sohu owns a majority stake in Changyou, Sohu must consolidate all financials into its statements -- even as Changyou is independently listed on stock exchanges. Whatever the case, Sohu actually created Changyou -- it started as a business unit in 2003, then was spun out in 2007. In any case, Sohu should do some serious soul-searching.
