Iron Man Crushes Spidey; Batman Is Next

Marvel Studios is quickly becoming Hollywood's top filmmaker. Last week, Iron Man 3 became the second consecutive film produced by the Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) unit to earn at least $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Marvel's The Avengers took in $1.5 billion during its epic run last summer.

Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 becomes the most lucrative single-character film in Marvel Studios history, having blown past Spider-Man 3's $891 million worldwide box office haul. Credit premium IMAX (NYSE: IMAX  ) showings for at least part of the win.

Next up: Batman. Christopher Nolan's trilogy concluded with The Dark Knight Rises, earning $1,084.4 million at the worldwide box office for Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) despite a troubling debut. Iron Man 3 needs just $48.5 million to pull even, according to Box Office Mojo estimates.
