Top Japanese Companies To Watch In Right Now

Last Friday The Detroit News reported the latest in Ford's (NYSE: F  ) round of vehicle recalls, noting that it would call back 465,000 vehicles for leaky fuel tanks and fire risks. Unfortunately for the Detroit automaker, it isn't the first issue that has made headlines over the last year as Ford's Escape and Fusion have been involved in numerous recalls.

However, if you were a general reader and glanced at these headlines you'd expect Ford to be near the top of vehicle recalls by manufacturer, but that's far from the truth. I dug deeper into past recall numbers, and was surprised at what I found.

By the numbers
I bet you'd be surprised to hear that in 2012 General Motor's (NYSE: GM  ) and Ford's vehicle recalls combined were less than Toyota's (NYSE: TM  ) or Honda's (NYSE: HMC  ) . Toyota took the top spot with 5.3 million vehicles recalled last year, which was nearly 2 million more than its Japanese rival Honda at 3.4 million. Ford and GM came in with significantly fewer recalls at 1.4 and 1.5 million, respectively. That's not an unusual result either; take a look at the graph below for cumulative recalls over the last three years:

    Briefly in the news
And now let's take a quick look at some of the other stories that shaped our week.

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG  ) hit a new 52-week high after posting stronger revenue than analysts were expecting. The burrito roller also indicated that menu price increases are on the way in a move that will increase margins. Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) also landed a fresh 52-week high, but it doesn't report until next week. The big push for the leading video service was a dozen Emmy nominations for House of Cards and Arrested Development. There's always a model-affirming Emmy nod in the banana stand. Inteliquent (NASDAQ: IQNT  ) moved sharply higher after jacking up its revenue and adjusted EBITDA targets for the year. The provider of wholesale voice services had hosed down its outlook in May.

  • [By The GeoTeam]

The largest single event the company has achieved is the acquisition of Tinet from Inteliquent (IQNT) , which had been IQNT's global data business. IQNT provides services to telecom providers, helping them deliver their network reach. With the divestiture of Tinet, IQNT's major focus is the delivery of voice versus data services.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Interval Leisure Group (Nasdaq: IILG  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

DRII stock hit the market just last year at $16.15 and now trades above $20. Only 3 analysts follow it, and earnings estimates aren spectacular. FY14 earnings are expected to be 92 cents, down from 96 in FY13 — but they’re also supposed to rise to $1.06 in FY15. The problem with Diamond is its debt structure. It paid $88 million on its $414 million in long-term debt last year. If it gets its interest payments refinanced, it worth a look because revenue growth is strong.

    Interval Leisure Group (IILG)

Interval Leisure Group (IILG) feels to me like it has been bought and sold many times, probably because it one of the oldest timeshare stocks, founded in 1976. Its 2,900 resorts are spread across 16 nations, with more than 2 million owners. It also diversifies its revenue stream by selling ownerships, and by managing and renting properties. Virtually ever major hotel chain is partnered with it.
